Genesis 1-3:20-24
Freddy Ortiz
At the dawn of it all, I split everything in two
Even you, twin reflection, born of dust and clay.
And after all was said and done,
How we would walk together
How I would watch you play, day after day,
In the Garden, as names fell from your tongue
As you dubbed the world—from the fish below to the birds above
Yes, truly, I have loved you.
Before the cold and formless waves.
Truly, I have loved you
As I do to this day.
Though you dressed your teeth in a fine red rind,
Though you hid from sight naked and ashamed
Though I sent you off and set those swords ablaze—
I still love you
Though seen through a mirror dimly,
I will love you,
And you may do the same—
If you want to…

I came into this world feet first, ready to get moving and start living. I grew up in a family of six: four siblings, Ma and Pa, and a grandpappy who's forever seventy-one. I didn't always like writing, let alone reading. It wasn't until the sixth grade that I turned heel. Held after class for not finishing a writing assignment, I wrote a short story using unit vocabulary words. My teacher, impressed by the tale of an apprehensive hero, said he couldn't wait to read more one day. Thus began my love for the written word.
